A woman in Florida, Dina Rae Spann, suffered a severe injury when an alligator attacked her while she swam in the Silver River in Marion County. Dina lost her right arm during the incident.

The attack occurred on a Saturday afternoon as Spann swam with a group. Her son, Zach Guerrina, reported that his mother tried to keep the alligator’s mouth closed as she surfaced for air. Despite her efforts, the alligator managed to take her right arm. She also lost part of her ring finger on the left hand during the struggle. Her right arm was amputated below the elbow.

John Gamache, who frequently visits the Silver Springs area, was nearby on a boat when he heard cries for help. He observed an alligator moving quickly towards the swimmers. Gamache approached the group, and his boat’s activity seemed to scare the alligator away. By then, the alligator had already released Spann.

Gamache found Spann holding onto a paddleboard with a significant arm injury. He used a rope as a tourniquet to control her bleeding, recognizing the urgency of the situation. Despite the severity of her injuries, Zach noted his mother remained calm.

After gathering the swimmers, Gamache and his father transported them to a nearby launch site where first responders awaited. Spann was hospitalized but was back home and in good spirits by Sunday, according to reports.

In response, authorities temporarily closed the Silver River for a wildlife search. A contracted trapper removed a 9-foot-8-inch alligator the following day, as confirmed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Gamache was thanked by Spann’s family for his quick actions. He reflected warmly on their gratitude and considered the incident’s outcome as fortunate given the circumstances.
