Naperville Central senior Grant Umbright maintained a calm demeanor that inspired confidence in his teammates. This quality showed when he pitched, played third base, or was involved in batting and base running.
Performance Highlights
Umbright, named the 2026 Naperville Sun Baseball Player of the Year, excelled in all areas. As the leading pitcher, he achieved a 9-1 record, a 2.03 ERA, allowed 31 hits, and recorded 71 strikeouts in 48 1/3 innings. As a hitter, he batted .324, led the team in triples and home runs with four each, and had 30 RBIs and 36 runs scored. His all-around performance was crucial for the Redhawks, who won 15 consecutive games to reach the Class 4A state semifinals and win the program’s third state trophy.
Naperville Central’s Grant Umbright, along with catcher Ashton Feldott, successfully navigated challenges during high-stakes games. An example was when Umbright remained composed as a teammate lost the ball in the lights during a sectional semifinal against Hinsdale Central. His calmness reassured others and highlighted his leadership.
Umbright’s Leadership and Development
Coach Mike Stock noted Umbright’s maturity evolution from the previous season. This growth was apparent during a successful spring break trip to Florida, where the team won four out of five games. Stock emphasized that Umbright’s development positively influenced his teammates’ performance.
Without any Division I commits or previous postseason winners, the Redhawks often exceeded expectations. Umbright’s unwavering dedication and familial ties to the program drove a strong team spirit. Stock praised Umbright for being both a respected and enjoyable teammate, and for making winning a collective effort.
Over the years, Umbright became an integral part of Naperville Central’s varsity team, leading to one of his most rewarding experiences. The team’s camaraderie and determination carried them through a successful season.
Adjusting to Umbright’s Prowess
Catcher Ashton Feldott, who was new to varsity, initially struggled to handle Umbright’s fastball, reaching speeds of 94 mph. However, as the season progressed, he adapted and appreciated Umbright’s accuracy and strategic unpredictable use of a change-up. Feldott observed that opposing hitters struggled against Umbright’s pitching artfully executed at a varying speed.
Umbright demonstrated his ability to excel against top-tier opponents. His standout performance in the supersectional against Minooka included going 3-for-3 against a Michigan State recruit and securing the victory.
Future Aspirations
As Umbright looks forward to joining John A. Logan, he anticipates focusing solely on pitching. He recognizes areas for improvement, particularly in physical strength, which he aims to enhance through dedicated weight room sessions.
Umbright remains committed to continuous growth and development as he prepares for his next chapter in baseball. His journey at Naperville Central lays a strong foundation for his future endeavors.
