Cubs’ Matthew Boyd Prepares for Return Amid Pete Crow-Armstrong’s Stellar Performance

Matthew Boyd is set to make his next start for the Chicago Cubs, though the exact date is yet to be confirmed. Boyd recently completed a bullpen session at Citi Field and reported feeling well after a rehab start at High-A South Bend. His return was delayed after experiencing left shoulder soreness during a bullpen session on June 9 in Denver.

The Cubs planned to have Boyd pitch again in San Francisco about ten days ago, but his recent health issues necessitated another rehab start. The team’s manager, Craig Counsell, plans for Boyd to start in the series finale against the New York Mets on Thursday. However, this is contingent upon the weather, as the potential for rescheduling due to rain could influence the decision.

Boyd emphasized his eagerness to return to competition, highlighting the importance of maximizing his preparedness during this downtime. Manager Counsell noted Boyd’s significant recovery progress, which was a priority following past shoulder issues. Boyd has only managed five starts and 24 innings this season because of previous surgeries and strains.

“We’ve got to get Matt out regularly,” Counsell remarked, stressing the need for Boyd to establish a consistent presence in the rotation to fully understand his condition. Recent adjustments to Boyd’s pitching mechanics, including arm position, appear to have mitigated his soreness.

“We made mechanical adjustments, and that resolved the issues quicker than expected,” Boyd explained, crediting these changes for his improved condition.

Meanwhile, Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong continues to shine, recently being named the National League player of the week for the second time this month. Crow-Armstrong delivered impressive statistics, hitting .550 with four home runs and seven RBIs over five games. His standout performance recalls the notable success of past Cubs players like Derrek Lee.

When asked about Crow-Armstrong’s recent at-bats, Counsell praised the effectiveness of his batting strategy. Specifically, he noted an at-bat against Blue Jays pitcher Mason Fluharty, where Crow-Armstrong recovered from a disadvantageous count to secure a key single.

“High-level hitting involves making strategic choices during at-bats,” Counsell said, recognizing Crow-Armstrong’s approach as exemplary.

In other news, the Cubs face challenges in All-Star Game voting amid recent offensive struggles. MLB released its latest voting results ahead of the first phase’s conclusion, with the top players moving to Phase 2. While several Cubs players rank within the top ten at their positions, including third baseman Alex Bregman and catcher Carson Kelly, others, like Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki, find themselves further down the list.

The All-Star Game starters and rosters are scheduled to be announced on July 4.
