Netflix is stepping into the ‘Hot Ones’ terrain with a new spinoff series, ‘Hot Ones: Extra Heat.’ This move follows the popular YouTube series where celebrities tackle spicy chicken wings during interviews, hosted by Sean Evans.
The streaming platform announced on Monday its intentions to feature this new show after prominent live sporting events and major film or series premieres on Netflix. The premiere episode is set for July 13, coinciding with the streamed completion of the Home Run Derby, part of the Major League Baseball All-Star event.
This development highlights Netflix’s intensifying competition with YouTube, which remains the most-watched streaming service on American TV according to Nielsen. Netflix, trailing in second place, has recently partnered with creators initially discovered through YouTube, such as children’s performer Ms. Rachel and science presenter Mark Rober.
Sean Evans noted that ‘Hot Ones: Extra Heat’ would maintain some recognizable elements from the original series, promising weekly releases on YouTube. Notably, Mr. Evans will continue engaging celebrities in the spicy ritual. The episodes, each lasting around 30 minutes, promise enhanced spectacle and a higher budget.
Unlike its precursor, ‘Hot Ones: Extra Heat’ will break free from the typical setting of a black-curtained studio, embracing new locations. The first episode will unfold at a college baseball stadium, hinting at a fresh approach for the spinoff series.
