New York Police Officer Shoots Driver of Stolen Vehicle

A New York City Police Department officer shot a driver on Sunday who was reportedly attempting to evade the police in a stolen vehicle, according to authorities. The incident involved a silver Kia Sportage that had been reported stolen from the Bronx. The vehicle was tracked by license plate readers and eventually located along West Fordham Road.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, they ordered the driver and passenger to exit. However, the driver allegedly responded by reversing the car, striking several officers and an unmarked police vehicle. The driver then drove forward, hitting another officer.

Assistant Chief Aneudy Castillo of Patrol Borough Bronx North described the events. “As members of the NYPD were around the car, the driver of the stolen vehicle put the car into reverse, hitting one member, hitting one of the unmarked vehicles, and ultimately hitting multiple members of the NYPD. He then put the Kia into drive and turned the wheels of the Kia to the right, where a sergeant was standing. He drove the car into the sergeant who was thrown to the ground,” Castillo said.

An officer stationed atop a nearby vehicle then opened fire, striking the driver as he continued to attempt to flee. Both the driver and the involved officers were taken to local hospitals in stable condition.

The charges against the driver, who was also arrested in February for shooting another individual, are pending. He faces multiple felony charges, including attempted felony assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a firearm. The entire incident was recorded on body-worn cameras and remains under investigation.
