Fox News articles are now accessible with listening options. After experiencing a devastating loss, a phenomenon referred to as Godwink can reveal hope in unexpected ways. Godwink is a term created by authors SQuire Rushnell and Louise DuArt, symbolizing a moment so significant that it brings profound, lasting change.
As Father’s Day approached, Rushnell and DuArt shared a story with Fox News Digital that highlighted such a moment. Ten years after the tragic loss of her father, bride Jeni Stepien walked towards her future with Paul Maenner, accompanied by a man who could affirm that her father’s heart was still beating.
Guests stood in emotional response during the wedding ceremony at a Pittsburgh church, witnessing Arthur Tom Thomas guide Jeni Stepien, daughter of his heart donor, down the aisle. Just before this touching moment, Thomas whispered to Jeni, offering her an unforgettable connection. He said gently, “If you’d like, when I give you away, you can place your hand on my chest and feel the beat of your father’s heart.”
The bride, once feeling permanently parted from her father, suddenly felt reunited not just emotionally but with his tangible presence. Beneath her hand, she sensed the heartbeat that had offered her comfort and encouragement throughout her life.
This Godwink was exceedingly powerful, profoundly affecting not only the bride and groom but many in attendance that day.
To Continue Blessing Others
In 2006, Jeni Stepien was 23 when her father, Michael, was fatally shot during a robbery. Despite the overwhelming sorrow, his family found compassion amidst their grief. Both Michael’s spouse, Bernice, and daughter Jeni consented to organ donation, choosing to help many others through their loss.
A couple of days later, hundreds of miles away, Tom Thomas received Michael’s donated heart, extending his life that needed urgent intervention. Facing severe illness with limited prognosis, this gift started a new chapter defined by gratitude and purpose. Tom Thomas lived another 18 years, influencing others, sharing daily kindness, and embracing life’s positive aspects.
Typically, donor families and recipients do not interact. However, through CORE (Center for Organ Recovery and Education), which managed the donation, Tom could convey his gratitude in a heartfelt letter to the family. This letter was delivered on Christmas Eve.
Would You Walk Me Down the Aisle?
Eventually, letters crossed between the two families as appreciation developed into friendship. Tom consistently celebrated occasions by sending flowers to the Stepien family. Jeni realized her father’s legacy continued to guide her through these acts of kindness.
Approaching her wedding, Jeni reached out to Tom with a poignant request: she asked, “Would you walk me down the aisle?” Acknowledging the honor, Tom felt the need to discuss this with his daughter, ensuring her comfort with this special gesture. Without hesitation, she agreed.
Another essential aspect of this narrative is Paul Maenner, who supported his bride amidst national attention following their wedding. Both Jeni and Tom shared their story on “Fox & Friends,” two days after their August 2016 ceremony.
This heartwarming story reminds us that love endures, even amid difficulties. Acts of kindness often create unseen ripples. As Father’s Day arrives, this narrative is a testament to the perpetual impact of a father’s love.
