Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon resulted in the deaths of at least seven people, including two children, on Saturday. These strikes came shortly after initial reports indicated a potential ceasefire agreement. Lebanon’s National News Agency confirmed the strikes on the town of Nabatiyeh and nearby villages, indicating that seven individuals remained trapped under debris.
Mediators are urgently working to pause the clashes between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. A significant exchange on Friday claimed the lives of at least 47 people in Lebanon and four Israeli soldiers. According to an Israeli military official, Hezbollah launched over 50 projectiles at Israeli forces, prompting Israel to retaliate. This official spoke anonymously due to protocol.
On Friday, Israeli ambassador Yechiel Leiter expressed on X that Israel is committed to a ceasefire if Hezbollah ceases hostilities. Publicly, Hezbollah has stated willingness to respect a ceasefire on condition of Israeli compliance; however, there has been no official ceasefire announcement. According to a Hezbollah representative, Qatar, the U.S., and Iran are trying to mediate peace but stopped short of confirming any agreement.
The conflict threatens to derail the recent U.S.-Iran accord reached this week. This agreement reopened the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global trade route, originally blocked by Iran amidst the growing conflict. The deal also plans to restart discussions on Iran’s nuclear program, central to the ongoing tensions. While not party to this agreement, the deal requires both Hezbollah and Israel to cease military actions in Lebanon.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to maintain an Israeli presence in southern Lebanon until threats are eliminated. Hezbollah demands an Israeli withdrawal, aligning with Iranian conditions for the U.S.-Iran deal.
On Saturday, smoke from Israeli strikes filled the skies over southern Lebanon as military jets flew over Tyre. In the village of Barish, strikes killed four family members, including parents and children. Additional strikes in Doueir and Kfar Rumman claimed further lives.
Netanyahu’s office did not provide immediate comments regarding the ceasefire negotiations. On Friday, he stated on X that military actions targeted 150 Hezbollah sites, killing numerous militants.
The ongoing combat affected diplomatic efforts, as Iranian and U.S. officials postponed their planned meetings in Switzerland pending the halt of hostilities. Iran’s Foreign Ministry reported continuing negotiations through mediators.
Upcoming talks in Switzerland aim to address Iran’s nuclear program, scrutinizing Tehran’s claims of peaceful intent amidst concerns it could develop nuclear weapons. These discussions, resembling those for the 2015 nuclear deal, are anticipated to be challenging.
The interim agreement grants 60 days for a nuclear settlement, with extensions possible. Successful negotiations could yield significant economic incentives, including lifting international sanctions and establishing a $300 billion reconstruction fund. Already, the U.S. has eased some restrictions, allowing Iran to resume oil sales.
