Protesters Rally Against Conservative Educators’ Summit in Lincolnshire

On Tuesday evening, protesters gathered at a Lincolnshire intersection to express their opposition to a conservative Christian educators’ summit held by the right-wing organization Turning Point USA. The event took place at the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort, drawing attention from two Lake County chapters of Indivisible, a progressive activist group. According to one organizer, the protest aimed to warn against the introduction of ‘white Christian nationalism’ into the educational system.

Organized Protest and Participation

The protest was coordinated by Indivisible Western Lake County and Indivisible Northeast Lake County. Approximately 60 to 70 attendees participated, as reported by Katie Sayler of Indivisible NE Lake County. The group seeks to challenge authoritarianism and protect local communities. Sayler emphasized the nonpartisan nature of their branch, focusing on addressing concerns related to extreme ideologies and messaging promoted by Turning Point USA.

Goals and Concerns

Sayler highlighted specific worries about the organization’s influence on education, including an intent to diminish constitutional and women’s rights. She argued their messaging threatens to erode educational standards and exclude diverse historical perspectives.

Turning Point Education, a TPUSA initiative, held its annual summit in Lake County for the second time. In 2023, the event occurred in Deerfield. TPUSA did not comment on the current situation as of Wednesday.

Turning Point USA’s Stated Objectives

The group’s website clearly outlines their Christian and conservative goals as part of their foundational beliefs. Their mission includes ‘reclaiming the education of our children’ and focusing on education based on truth, goodness, and beauty. Speakers at the summit included TPUSA CEO Erika Kirk and other prominent conservative figures.

Community Reactions and Political Landscape

Protesters chanted and held signs, targeting both TPUSA and political figures such as President Donald Trump. The rally occurred near Milwaukee Avenue and Route 22 in Lincolnshire. Participants like Julia Plescia voiced concerns about religious indoctrination in schools. The former school nurse and Woodland School District 50 board member linked her activism to current political climates.

While some passing vehicles showed support, others expressed dissent. This reflects Lake County’s political shift over two decades. The region now leans more Democratic, with the last five presidential elections favoring Democratic candidates. The area has also been involved in discussions on controversial issues, such as the use of changing rooms by transgender students.

Political Efforts in Lake County

TPUSA seemingly seeks influence within Lake County. Joe Salvi, a young Republican candidate for the Lake County Board District seat, plans to bolster Republican youth engagement. He has contributed to creating ‘Club America’ chapters, the high school counterparts of Turning Point. Four chapters reportedly exist in the county, although only the Lake Forest chapter is verifiable through public records.

Meanwhile, Lake County has experienced leadership changes within both major political parties. State Rep. Daniel Didech, a Democrat, and Dawn Abernathy, a Republican, are new figures leading their respective parties.
