Brazil’s Supreme Court Convicts Eduardo Bolsonaro for Coercion

Brazil’s Supreme Court has convicted former lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro on charges of coercion. His conviction stems from interference related to the trial that led to his father, ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, receiving a 27-year prison sentence for a coup attempt last year. Eduardo Bolsonaro has been sentenced to four years and two months in prison. All five justices on the case unanimously agreed on his illegal interference by lobbying the U.S. government to pressure Brazilian officials to halt the trial.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who presided over both trials, remarked that a federal lawmaker’s role is not to oppose their own nation internationally. Notably, Justice de Moraes and his wife received sanctions from the U.S. government in July of the previous year.

Eduardo Bolsonaro’s legal team contested the verdict, arguing insufficient evidence for the conviction. The former lawmaker has been residing in Texas since February 2025.

U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Brazil last year, in response to Jair Bolsonaro’s prosecution for allegedly attempting to overturn the 2022 electoral loss to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Although relations between Trump and Lula appeared to improve following Lula’s visit to the White House in early May, the U.S. government later proposed a 25% tariff on Brazilian imports, attributing it to Brazil’s alleged unfair trade practices.

Lula stated that during his visit to Washington in May, he provided Trump with documentation indicating a U.S. trade surplus with Brazil. Eduardo Bolsonaro has remained silent regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Additionally, Eduardo is supporting his brother, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, in his bid to compete against Lula in the upcoming October elections. However, Flávio’s candidacy is embroiled in a scandal involving a financial transaction with a disgraced banker. Both Eduardo and Flávio recently engaged with U.S. officials in Washington, including Trump.
