Elliot Page Discusses Healthy Masculinity

Transgender actor Elliot Page provided insights on “healthy masculinity” during a discussion on the “It’s Open with Ilana Glazer” podcast. Page explained that healthy masculinity involves moving away from the tendency to shut down emotionally.

According to the 39-year-old “Odyssey” actor, healthy masculinity is about avoiding the impulse to close off from others. Page said, “Healthy masculinity, to me, is, or even just something I’ve felt as transitioning, is like leaning away from whenever there is some sort of impulse or expectation you’ve put on yourself to shut down or conform in a way that feels like closing off.”

Page, who came out as transgender in 2020, shared personal experiences to illustrate these concepts. He mentioned a change in his response to photographs after transitioning, noting that he now finds himself smiling more in pictures, an experience vastly different from his past discomfort with seeing his own images.

The actor observed behaviors among male fans as well, noting contrasts in their reluctance to smile in photos. Page pondered, “Should I also be closed off? It’s like, what the f—, Elliot? What are you talking about? Like, oh, honey, you’re part of the problem.” This reflection underscores his evolving understanding of masculinity and emotional expression.

Page also presented a broader view of healthy masculinity, emphasizing self-care practices such as drinking water and encouraging men to “love themselves.” He suggested that healthy masculinity could simply be having “a really good cry.” Page stressed intentional efforts to avoid being swayed by harmful societal norms that contribute to toxic masculinity, violence, and general cruelty.

The article mentions that Fox News Digital reached out to Page’s representatives for comment. Page’s journey includes an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for the role of Juno in 2007, along with notable appearances in “Inception” and the “X-Men” series.
