The Dormition Cathedral in Kyiv has become the latest victim in the ongoing conflict, as Russian missile and drone strikes on Monday struck the ancient site. President Volodymyr Zelensky described the event as ‘one of the largest Russian crimes against Christian culture.’
Historical Significance
The Dormition Cathedral, rebuilt after World War II, stands as a key pilgrimage destination. On Monday, a wave of Russian attacks across several cities resulted in 11 fatalities and multiple injuries, according to Ukrainian officials.
Tow drones also hit the historic monastic complex of the cathedral,
said President Zelensky on social media. Verified video footage shows firefighters working from cranes to douse flames, as orange glows through the cathedral’s iconic white facade.
Impact on Cultural Heritage
The war has seen numerous Ukrainian religious sites suffer damage or destruction. However, the cathedral’s attack is particularly significant, emphasizing the cultural loss.
‘This is, as of today, one of the largest Russian crimes against Christian culture,’ emphasized Zelensky.
In addition to the cathedral, Ukraine’s Culture Ministry reported damage to several museums, a film studio, and an extensive costume collection, marking another blow to the nation’s cultural legacy.
