Russia fired ballistic missiles into Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, causing significant damage on Monday. This marks Russia’s second major attack on the city within a week. Officials reported that the assault resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals.

As of July 5, 2026, with updates at 11:05 p.m. ET, the city was rocked by explosions early in the morning, coinciding with the day before a scheduled NATO summit. President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, who is anticipated to attend the summit in Turkey, had cautioned that Russia was organizing “a new massive strike” on the capital.

Hours after his warning, loud explosions were heard throughout Kyiv. The regional military administration confirmed the presence of ballistic missiles in the area. Mayor Vitali Klitschko advised residents to remain in shelters for their safety.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, confirmed that at least seven individuals lost their lives, with over two dozen others injured. As dawn approached, thick black smoke was visible rising from the skyline. Klitschko reported that emergency services were attending to multiple fires, including at a damaged apartment building where people were trapped.

Previous to this, on Thursday, Russia launched a prolonged attack on Kyiv, utilizing missiles and drones. This nearly 12-hour assault resulted in 31 fatalities and injured more than 100 people.

The NATO summit is scheduled to commence on Tuesday in Ankara, Turkey, where discussions are expected to focus heavily on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
