Joslin participated in displaying a transgender flag at El Capitan in May 2025 as a sign of solidarity. Afterward, they found themselves embroiled in controversy and alleged their firing was retaliation for peaceful off-duty expression.

In February 2026, Joslin filed a lawsuit against multiple government entities, seeking job reinstatement, a ruling against the government’s actions, protection from criminal charges, and financial compensation. A federal judge recently dismissed the case, stating that the court lacks authority to reinstate Joslin. U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Thurston noted that Joslin used an incorrect process to contest their firing.

Joslin was off-duty when installing the flag, acting as a private citizen. Shortly after, a Park Service law enforcement officer informed them of an investigation into the incident. Yosemite’s acting deputy superintendent later issued a termination letter. The court revealed Joslin’s termination occurred weeks before completing their trial period, citing failure to demonstrate acceptable conduct by participating in an unpermitted demonstration.

Joslin received documentation referencing a presidential executive order and unspecified unacceptable conduct. Their termination gained attention online, where they expressed outrage on social media. Joslin wrote on Instagram in August 2025 about their desire to reclaim their rights and career, emphasizing past conduct devoid of negative feedback.

Judge Thurston advised Joslin to pursue their challenge through the Civil Service Reform Act. Joslin initiated a complaint with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel (OSC) in December 2025, citing prohibited personnel practices. Joslin highlighted the broader implications of their firing, raising concerns over free speech rights for civil servants and Americans.

The OSC has a response deadline of 240 days, expected by August 3, but may delay due to a government shutdown and case backlog.
