Heat and Humidity Sweep into the Northeast

The simmering heat that impacted the central United States is now advancing into the Northeast. It marks the first widespread hit of summerlike weather for cities such as New York this year. This shift in weather will occur on Thursday and Friday, and it carries the threat of storms.

According to Bryan Ramsey, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service in New York, while the conditions might not reach the oppressive 100-degree mark, they will still feel sweltering. Ramsey, familiar with humidity from his upbringing in Houston, warns that the high moisture levels will make Thursday and Friday notably uncomfortable.

The cause is a thick air mass moving in behind a warm front. This system will leave individuals feeling sticky and damp due to its impact on the body’s natural cooling system. While June is typically the start of warmer spells, this weather pattern mirrors an unseasonal series of 90-degree days experienced in April, only now with heightened levels of tropical moisture.

Residents of the East Coast may find some relief as storms could disrupt the rising temperatures. Bob Oravec, a senior forecaster at the federal Weather Prediction Center, notes that high temperatures will range between 90 and 95 degrees in many areas. Though these may not reach record-breaking highs, he advises caution due to the intense heat people will experience.
