Freshman shortstop Dallas Bowen has made a swift and profound impact on Hanover Central. Senior catcher Sienna Stilley, committed to Jacksonville State, speaks highly of Bowen. “I choose her every single time,” Stilley said. “Whether it’s a game-clinching hit or a play at short to seal the game, she’s the one I pick every time.”
Bowen’s arrival comes as a blessing for the Wildcats, showcasing her talent and genuine personality. The Wildcats, boasting a 25-6 record, won the Northwest Crossroads Conference title and secured the No. 10 spot in the state coaches poll. They prepare to face No. 7 New Palestine (24-7) in the Class 3A state championship game.
Bowen, hitting .371, has six homers, four triples, five doubles, 28 RBIs, 38 runs scored, and 10 stolen bases. In their recent victory against East Noble in the semistate final, Bowen hit a three-run homer to start the scoring.
Coach Sam Antkiewicz praised her addition to the team. “Graduating my daughter, who played shortstop last year, was bittersweet. But Dallas fit right in. She works hard and is a competitive player. It’s great to have her with us.”
Bowen approaches her role with confidence, aiming to help the Wildcats add to their 2002 Class 2A state title after last year’s defeat to Indianapolis Cathedral in the finals. “Knowing I have the team behind me gives me support,” Bowen said.
“Dallas inspires you to become a better person and player,” Stilley noted. “She encourages others even when she’s having an off day.”
Bowen’s family ties to sports are significant. Her brother, Drayk Bowen, will captain Notre Dame’s football team next season and achieved Mr. Football in Northwest Indiana. Her other brother, Dylan Bowen, recently graduated, starred at shortstop, and is an MLB draft prospect. This family dynamic motivates Dallas. “Seeing them succeed pushes me,” she said.
Bowen envisions playing at the highest level in competitive regions like Texas, Florida, or Oklahoma. Stilley expressed confidence in Bowen’s potential. “I know she has all tools to be a great athlete, and she needs to believe it too. Her success this season makes me proud.”
Bowen’s maturity extends beyond athletics. “She’s matured greatly over the season, and I’m excited about her future,” Stilley declared.
Facing veteran opponents like New Palestine, who have six state titles, motivates Bowen. “It’s exciting to experience this with our team,” Bowen said. “We have a good shot, and our unity makes it more enjoyable.”
Bowen acknowledges the importance of proving herself this year with a talented group. “We’re competitive, never give up, and always stick together.”
