Republican Sen. Susan Collins is seeking a sixth term in the U.S. Senate representing Maine, a state known for its Democratic leanings. She has secured her party’s nomination without opposition in the GOP primary. Her re-election bid is one of several key races that could determine the Republican control of the Senate.
As Democrats push to reclaim the Senate majority in the midterms, Collins is a primary target. “I have been the No. 1 target of Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer,” she stated in a recent interview with Fox News Digital.
Competing against Collins is Democrat Graham Platner, a military veteran and oyster farmer. He became the probable nominee after former Gov. Janet Mills withdrew from the race. Mills had lagged behind Platner in both fundraising and polls.
While Collins concentrates on her Senate work, Platner faces controversies. These include contentious remarks on Reddit and allegations from ex-girlfriends about his past behavior. Platner has admitted to battling post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. He acknowledged a “dark period” involving excessive drinking but denied other allegations, describing them as politically driven.
Platner apologized for Reddit posts that surfaced after starting his Senate campaign. He explained that a tattoo, initially a skull and crossbones, was covered up upon realizing its resemblance to a Nazi symbol. Platner says he was unaware of the tattoo’s implication until recently, although some question his timeline.
Platner, endorsed by prominent progressives like Bernie Sanders, campaigns on an economically populist platform. He opposes corporate influence and supports the working class, contrasting Collins’ record.
Collins, when asked about Platner’s political stance, expressed confidence in Maine voters. “I believe that will be the conclusion of Maine voters,” she said, while contrasting her achievements with Platner’s political approach.
Platner criticizes Collins as part of a “broken Washington,” challenging her moderate image and questioning her alignment with former President Donald Trump’s agenda. He accuses her of favoring wealthy interests over the public.
The Republican Party faces political headwinds, including economic issues like inflation and high gas prices, coupled with Trump’s approval ratings. Collins defends her work on low-income heating assistance and food stamp benefits, emphasizing their importance for Maine residents.
Public opinion polls indicate a competitive race. However, Collins has overcome Democratic challenges in the past, notably defeating Sara Gideon by nearly nine points six years ago.
Collins acknowledges potential attack ads, stating, “The people of Maine are smart, and they know lies and distortions when they see it.”
