He defeated two opponents in Maine’s Democratic Senate primary, according to the Associated Press.

Platner now prepares to challenge moderate Republican Sen. Susan Collins, who faced no opposition in the GOP primary. This race in left-leaning Maine will be key in deciding control of the Senate. Platner’s platform focuses on economic populism, targeting corporate power and supporting the working class.

Despite controversies, including alleged inappropriate conduct and former relationships, Platner’s supporters have not withdrawn their endorsements. Former staffers and others have raised concerns about his past, including inflammatory comments on Reddit and a tattoo linked to a Nazi symbol, which he covered up upon learning of its significance.

Platner has stated that he grapples with PTSD from military service, and he has apologized for online comments made during difficult times. He emphasizes his personal growth and redemption through his work as an oyster farmer in Maine.

Ro Khanna, a supporter, noted Platner’s progress, stating, “He really grew as a person.” Democratic voters appear divided, with some questioning his viability in the race against Collins.

Republican groups have intensified their attacks on Platner, highlighting his controversies and questioning his authenticity. The National Republican Senatorial Committee labeled him a “fraud.” Meanwhile, Collins reached a milestone with her 10,000th consecutive Senate vote and remains a formidable opponent.
