Nic Smith, a Kentucky Wildcats defensive lineman, passed away at the age of 20, as announced by the football program. Smith was a redshirt freshman with the Wildcats in the previous season.
In a heartfelt statement shared on X, Kentucky coach Will Stein expressed deep sorrow, stating, “Today our hearts are broken. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic’s family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him.”
According to a university spokesperson, campus police responded to a report of a possible body at an on-campus residence hall. The university later confirmed Smith’s death. An initial investigation, involving the University of Kentucky Police Department and the Lexington-Fayette County Coroner, suggested no foul play.
Coach Stein acknowledged, “This is a tremendous loss for our program and university community. We will continue to support one another and honor his memory.” Smith was known within the Kentucky athletic community by nicknames such as “Happy” and “Big Happ.” He pursued studies in community leadership and development within the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment.
Smith’s athletic journey began at Walnut Grove High School in Loganville, Georgia, where he participated in both football and basketball. A photo of the young athlete, wearing his jersey number 55, can be found on the Kentucky athletic department’s website.
