Idris Elba addressed the ongoing speculation about his potential casting as James Bond in a recent interview with British GQ. The 53-year-old actor expressed doubts about audiences accepting a ‘Black male’ as the iconic spy.
“I’ve always felt that it’s not realistic,” said Elba. “James Bond was written how he was for a reason. Although I was flattered by the idea, certain markets won’t embrace a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not part of their culture.”
Elba emphasized the importance of maintaining the essence of Bond, known for its escapism. “Bond is so unrealistic. A touch of reality is good, but let’s not try to make it ‘woke.’ Bond should be what it is,” he added.
In 2023, Elba touched on the topic while speaking at the World Government Summit in Dubai, clarifying that he’s set to remain as John Luther and not pursue the Bond role. “The focus on race can hinder aspirations and growth,” Elba mentioned to Esquire U.K.
Daniel Craig last played the famed spy in the 2021 film, “No Time to Die.”
Responding to backlash, Elba wrote, “No one can question whether I consider myself a BLACK MAN or not. Acting is a profession like being an architect, not defined by race. If you define your work by your race, that is your choice.”
Amazon MGM Studios recently provided an update on the future of the Bond franchise. “The search for the next James Bond is underway,” they said, noting they would inform fans when the time is right.
