The selected crew for NASA’s Artemis III mission will enter Earth’s orbit with a distinctive style, thanks to Prada’s latest innovation. They will don a Prada-designed bodysuit.
Prior to the official Artemis III team announcement, the Italian fashion house Prada, in collaboration with Axiom Space, presented the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (L.C.V.G.) at their store in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood. This garment will be worn under the Extravehicular Mobility Unit spacesuit (AxEMU), developed by Axiom and Prada, during lunar missions.
The unveiling event began at 10:30 a.m., featuring black-clad waiters serving champagne and green juice within the Rem Koolhaas-designed venue. A specially constructed stage among premium leather handbags and dresses highlighted the new bodysuit.
Jonathan Cirtain, Axiom Space’s CEO, described the L.C.V.G. as “aesthetically pleasing.” This description was not commonly associated with space apparel.
The L.C.V.G., part of Prada’s second phase of collaboration with Axiom Space, follows their partnership inception in 2023. The garment features a stretchy, gray fabric made from proprietary yarns, including titanium. It has stirrup pants and black tubes curving around the body.
Internal tunnels facilitate the flow of water to cool the body, creating a knit pattern resembling anatomical topography. Unlike previous versions, this L.C.V.G. is more reminiscent of a superhero’s uniform than traditional astronaut apparel.
The event included champagne service and the L.C.V.G. displayed alongside the AxEMU spacesuit.
