A significant earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 occurred off the coast of Sarangani in southern Philippines early Monday. This has resulted in a tsunami alert.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded the earthquake and stated that tsunami waves are expected between 7:37 a.m. and 9:37 a.m. local time.

Authorities have issued a tsunami warning for various coastal areas in southern Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago. Residents in these regions have been advised to evacuate to higher ground or move further inland as a precautionary measure. This guidance comes from the U.S. embassy in the Philippines.

So far, at least 15 individuals have died, and 129 have sustained injuries, as reported by Philippine authorities.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has confirmed that there is no threat to Hawaii.
