Protests and Legal Developments at New Jersey Detention Center

Protests Erupt at New Jersey Detention Center

Videos shared online revealed clashes between law enforcement and protesters outside a detention center in Newark, New Jersey. The incidents occurred on a Friday night and involved efforts by agents to disperse demonstrators from the entrance of Delaney Hall. Footage shows agents detaining a protester, followed by the arrival of several police vehicles.

A coordinated effort from law enforcement just cleared the blockage in front of the main entrance to Delaney Hall enabling a vehicle to leave the facility.

In addition, it cleared the way for previously blocked vehicles to enter the side entrance.

The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement, responded to these events with a firm message against disruptions.

Protester Struck by Vehicle

A video surfaced depicting a protester being knocked down by a vehicle exiting Delaney Hall. Protesters attempted to block multiple vehicles, resulting in at least one person being struck. Observers quickly assisted the individual who fell.

After an extended standoff between officials and protesters, vehicles exiting Delaney Hall forced their way out.

At least one member in the crowd appears to have been hit by an exiting vehicle.

New Jersey’s Legal Support Initiative

New Jersey Governor Mike Sherill announced $20 million funding to aid legal defense for immigrants facing deportation. This includes a $12 million increase for the Detention Deportation Defense Initiative, aiming to support low-income families and detainees at Delaney Hall.

Sherill emphasized the importance of access to legal representation and outlined a new Rapid Legal Response Initiative to bolster emergency immigration defense across the state.

Police Sergeant Charged in Alleged Theft

A New Jersey police sergeant, Darryl Brown, faces charges after allegedly stealing $10,000 worth of equipment from a photojournalist injured during protests at Delaney Hall. The journalist, Angelina Katsanis, tracked the missing equipment to Brown’s home using a geo-tracking device.

A search at Brown’s residence uncovered several missing items, leading to his suspension without pay. Brown’s body camera footage showed interactions with the stolen bag.
