San Antonio Spurs standout Victor Wembanyama focuses on winning championships and NBA MVP awards. However, his actions off the court have made him a fascinating figure.
Earlier this postseason, during his inaugural playoff run, ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne detailed Wembanyama’s visit to the Shaolin Temple in China last summer. Her report revealed that he dribbled a basketball up a challenging mountain route in 4.5 hours. As Wembanyama battles the New York Knicks in the 2026 NBA Finals, his reputation continues to grow.
The Athletic’s Jared Weiss wrote extensively about Wembanyama’s effort to become the face of the NBA. Wembanyama stated, “not gonna give basketball a choice of who the face is going to be.” Despite aspirations, Weiss emphasized that the 7-foot-4 French player remains true to himself.
Prior to joining the NBA, Wembanyama declined multi-million-dollar marketing offers from beverage companies while earning approximately $150,000 with a French club. Jeremy Medjana, co-founder of Angence Comsport, explained, “We’re not gonna mix his image with sodas like Coca-Cola. They all want him, but Victor will never sell soda. Because he doesn’t want to kill the kids.”
At 22 years old, Wembanyama is already making a significant impact. If the Spurs win the Finals, his status might reach levels similar to a young LeBron James. The Knicks aim for their first championship appearance since losing to the Spurs in 1999. Meanwhile, San Antonio seeks its first title since 2014.
