R&B Singer Peabo Bryson Passes Away at 75

Peabo Bryson, the renowned R&B singer and two-time Grammy Award winner, has died at the age of 75. Known for his iconic Disney film duets, ‘Beauty and the Beast’ with Celine Dion and ‘A Whole New World’ with Regina Belle from ‘Aladdin,’ Bryson’s legacy extends far beyond these classics.

In a statement released by his family, they expressed their heartbreak while celebrating the love and impact Bryson’s voice and generous spirit had on many. ‘His legacy and music will live on for generations to come,’ the statement read.

Bryson’s illustrious career spanned over five decades, during which he became one of R&B’s premier balladeers. His list of hits includes ‘Feel the Fire,’ ‘I’m So Into You,’ and ‘Can You Stop the Rain.’ His music provided a soundtrack to countless cherished moments, filled with comfort and inspiration.

“For more than five decades, Peabo’s extraordinary voice served as the soundtrack to some of life’s most cherished moments,” his family said.

Born in South Carolina, Bryson began his career in the 1970s with Moses Dillard and the Tex-Town Display. He soon became a solo artist under Bang Records and later recorded with Capitol, Elektra, and Columbia Records. His talent also shone through collaborations with artists like Roberta Flack and Natalie Cole. The duet ‘Tonight, I Celebrate My Love’ with Flack became a defining love song of the 1980s, broadening his appeal beyond R&B audience with hits like ‘If Ever You’re in My Arms Again.’ He also achieved No. 1 R&B hits with songs like ‘Show & Tell’ and ‘Can You Stop the Rain.’

Beyond his music career, Bryson made appearances in stage productions such as ‘Raisin,’ ‘The Wiz,’ and ‘Porgy and Bess.’ His 21st studio album, ‘Stand for Love,’ was released in 2018, produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

In May, Bryson suffered a stroke and received medical attention, with his family requesting privacy during this personal time. Their earlier statement welcomed the thoughts, prayers, and love from friends and fans.

Bryson had previously made a full recovery after a heart attack in 2019. Comedian and television host Loni Love shared a personal memory of Bryson, recounting a heartfelt conversation they shared on a deck one evening during a cruise. She described him as passionate about his music and grateful for the shared moment.

The family plans to announce memorial and celebration-of-life arrangements at a future date.
