Serena Williams has announced her return to professional tennis after stepping away in September 2022. Collaborating with Nike, Williams will compete in the doubles event at the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club in London from June 8-14.
The 44-year-old athlete shared her reasons for returning now, highlighting the significance of grass courts in her career. “Queen’s Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter,” Williams stated. “Grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and I’m excited to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.”
During her absence, Williams focused on her family life with husband Alexis Ohanian, welcoming their second child in 2023. However, her competitive spirit remained strong, leading to her decision to return to the WTA Tour.
“Serena is one of the greatest athletes of all time, with a legacy that extends far beyond the court,” stated WTA chair Valerie Camillo. “Her return is an expression of her passion for competition, and I cannot wait to see her face a new generation of top players.”
Williams’ comeback has been celebrated within the tennis community, recognizing her as a champion, entrepreneur, and advocate. Her presence on the tour is anticipated to invigorate women’s tennis during this thrilling time.
