Frank Beard, the well-known drummer for ZZ Top, has passed away at the age of 77. The band confirmed the news to CBS News, stating that he died on Monday while in hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by family. The specifics surrounding his death were not disclosed.
Beard teamed up with guitarist Billy Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill to establish ZZ Top in 1969. In 2021, Dusty Hill passed away, and fulfilling Hill’s request, his bass tech, Elwood Francis, stepped in as his successor.
Gibbons expressed his sorrow on social media, saying, “Today, Elwood and I lost a great friend and collaborator, and the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas. His signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on top.”
Frank Beard had performed at various events, including during the $20 Best Night Ever Tour at DTE Energy Center on August 20, 2013, in Clarkston, Michigan.
Due to Beard’s passing, the band has decided to cancel two upcoming shows in Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs. However, the tour will resume this weekend at Austin City Limits, a venue that held a special place in Beard’s heart, as Austin was like a second home to him.
This is a developing story and will be updated with more details as they become available.
