The 16 cities hosting the FIFA World Cup have experienced a sharp rise in hotel rates. According to FCM Consulting, hotel prices have surged significantly compared to last summer. Among these cities, 13 have reported a year-over-year increase of at least 80% per night.
With less than a month before the tournament begins, this World Cup is set to be the largest ever. It spans the United States, Canada, and Mexico after years of preparation. While the event aims to stimulate the U.S. economy, concerns grow about high ticket and hotel prices possibly deterring fans.
Ticket Sales and Demand Issues
Ticket demand appears lower than expected. Newsweek reported that resale prices for some matches have dropped significantly. For example, one group-stage game is below $100 per ticket, with over 1,000 tickets still available.
Thousands of tickets are unsold, especially in U.S. host cities. These tickets seem concentrated in lower-demand matchups. Former U.S. President Donald Trump commented on high ticket prices, like the $1,000 tag for the U.S. team’s opening match against Paraguay on June 12, saying, “I wouldn’t pay it either.”
Rising Hotel Rates
The high ticket prices are mirrored by soaring hotel costs. The FCM Consulting report shows average nightly rates of about $499 for host cities, up from $438 before the tournament schedule release. Match nights see an average rate of $524, compared to $398 on non-game nights.
In the U.S., hotel pricing varies widely. Boston leads with an average nightly rate of $611, followed by New York/New Jersey at $593. Houston is currently the most affordable at $205 per night.
Vancouver is the priciest host city overall, with average rates near $890, driven by a limited supply of roughly 22,700 rooms.
Mexico’s host cities see steep percentage increases despite lower base rates. Guadalajara, for example, shows the largest jump, where prices rose from $90 last summer to $511 now.
Challenges in Hotel Bookings
Hotel bookings are falling short of projections for the World Cup period. Reports from city hotel owners and industry representatives indicate that 80% of bookings are below initial forecasts.
The U.S. State Department has attempted to ease travel restrictions for event attendees. They waived a $15,000 deposit for visa applicants from 50 countries with valid tickets to the competition.
Event Timeline
The World Cup’s opening match will feature Mexico and South Africa on June 11. The event will conclude on July 19.
