A Brazilian woman has been found guilty of living with a foster family under a false identity while pretending to be a child for over a year. Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira, aged 37, was convicted of fraud and false identity. The Court of Justice of Santa Catarina confirmed her conviction last Thursday.
For 14 months, Oliveira lived with a family as their daughter. She told them she had escaped from an abusive situation. In reality, she was executing an elaborate deception to hide her true age and identity. She later admitted to fabricating a false identity, utilizing a high-pitched voice, and claiming hormone use to appear older.
Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira was found guilty of fraud and false identity in Brazil, court documents reveal.
The court sentenced her to one year, six months, and ten days in prison, accompanied by an additional four months and 18 days of detention. Oliveira’s attorney, Lúcio Sousa, stated that her actions stemmed from survival needs, as she had been vulnerable for over two decades.
Despite her lawyer’s defense, Oliveira confessed that she described an identity to seek the love and care she felt she missed during her childhood. Sousa emphasized that her actions lacked any financial gain, thus questioning the fraud accusation elements.
In Oliveira’s own words, her intention was not to defraud anyone, though she acknowledged misleading and lying to people. She expressed a desire to receive the affection and attention she longed for from her past experiences.
Following the court’s decision, Sousa announced on social media their intent to seek further legal action and explore appeals in higher courts.
