Yesterday marked a return to winning form on the baseball field, providing a much-needed boost after a series of losses. Today, the focus shifts from the diamond to the basketball court, where compelling WNBA matchups await.
Golden State Valkyries vs. New York Liberty
The Golden State Valkyries, a standout team even in only their second year, are rewriting expectations for WNBA expansion teams. They have crafted a balanced team structure that combines strong inside and outside presences, allowing them consistent scoring from all players.
New York Liberty entered the season with championship hopes fueled by star players like Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Sabrina Ionescu. Despite this, their inconsistent record, especially a 10-10 on-the-road performance, has been a concern. However, their recent form shows promise, with 10 wins in the last 13 matches and an impressive 13-5 home record. Expect the Liberty to use their home court advantage and break their losing streak against the Valkyries. Backing New York with a -2.5 spread seems a solid choice.

Washington Mystics vs. Phoenix Mercury
Washington Mystics are in pursuit of postseason success following difficult seasons since 2023. Drafting Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen has boosted their roster, resulting in three top-scoring players each averaging over 15 points a game.
Conversely, Phoenix Mercury’s downturn is unexpected, considering last season’s WNBA Finals appearance. Current stats, like a 13-25 record and underperformance at home, reflect severe challenges despite having players like Kahleah Copper and Alyssa Thomas. Injuries and recent team adjustments, such as signing Kelsey Plum, have not stabilized their season.
Given their recent game where Washington defeated Phoenix by 10 points, expect the Mystics to cover a -3.5 spread once more. For Mercury, the focus may shift towards future drafts as they address gaps in their strategy.
