William Shatner’s and Daughter’s Close Brush with Cancer

William Shatner, at 95, recently shared a frightening health scare that almost went unnoticed. He initially faced medical dismissal when a doctor considered a lump harmless, misdiagnosing it as a salivary gland issue. Later, another medical opinion led to a chilling diagnosis: stage 4 malignant melanoma.

During an appearance on ‘CBS Mornings,’ Shatner recounted his experience. A doctor friend felt the lump and strongly advised him to seek further examination, saying, ‘You better get this out.’ This advice proved pivotal in securing a life-saving diagnosis. An oncologist confirmed the urgency, telling Shatner, ‘We got to take that out now.’

The actor revealed that the cancer had already spread, showing up as tiny points in his brain and lungs. This prompted immediate surgery to remove the tumor, followed by a two-year immunotherapy regimen.

Shatner and his daughter’s simultaneous battle with cancer underscores the importance of second opinions when health concerns arise.

Melanie Shatner Gretsch, his daughter, faced her own health crisis. Months before her father’s diagnosis, she felt a breast lump. Despite a prior clean mammogram, her instincts led her to seek further evaluation. Gretsch was diagnosed with HER2-positive breast cancer that had reached her chest lymph nodes.

Her aggressive treatment plan included chemotherapy, radiation, a double mastectomy, and immunotherapy. During this challenging time, she experienced moments of vulnerability and leaned on her father for support, calling him during particularly difficult days.

By the end of 2024, both father and daughter were declared cancer-free. For Gretsch, sharing her recovery with Shatner was deeply emotional, marking a rare moment of hearing her father cry.

Despite these health scares, Shatner remains active. He continues to engage in new ventures, including books, a podcast, and music projects.
