Will Ospreay Triumphs Over Samoa Joe at AEW Double or Nothing

Will Ospreay realized a long-held dream on Sunday night during the All Elite Wrestling (AEW) Double or Nothing event in New York. Competing in the first round of the Owen Hart Men’s Tournament, he faced off against Samoa Joe. The victor of this tournament will earn an opportunity for the AEW World Championship at All In, AEW’s flagship event at Wembley Stadium in England.

Ospreay started strong, surprising Joe with an OsCutter. As the match progressed, it was Ospreay who dominated, striking Joe multiple times with Hidden Blades to secure his victory. Post-match, Ospreay was questioned about his potential to become AEW’s leading figure should he win the tournament and eventually the title. He confidently stated, “It’s because I have that confidence and that belief I can carry those three letters. The middle letter, ‘E,’ that’s the standard, mate – elite. When everybody talks about elite pro wrestling, there is no one better on this planet. I believe that with my heart. I believe that with my soul.”

Reflecting on his ambitions, Ospreay remarked, “I know what I’m capable of. I know what I can do. This place, the motto, and it gets said over and over again, ‘this is where the best wrestle.’ No, mate. This is where the ‘Billy Goat’ wrestles. And I’m ready more than ever to take that top spot and to take AEW to new heights.”

Ospreay shared that performing at Wembley Stadium has been a dream since his school days, when peers dreamed of soccer stardom. Overcoming a neck injury, he trained with the Death Riders to return to peak form. Samoa Joe expressed frustration over the situation, leading to their match at Double or Nothing.

Next, Ospreay will face either Mark Davis or Jack Perry in the semifinals. In another match, Swerve Strickland defeated Bandido and will compete against either Claudio Castagnoli or Brody King in the semis. The Owen Cup finals are slated for June 28 at Forbidden Door.
