James Blair, a senior political advisor to President Donald Trump, praised departing White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, highlighting her significant role in the administration. As the midterm elections approach, Blair warned that her successor will face intense scrutiny due to the importance of the position.
Blair noted that the next press secretary will be examined closely, given Leavitt’s notable performance during her tenure. He stated, “She was tremendous, forming a strong connection with the president, understanding both his communication style and message.” Leavitt is stepping down at the end of August to focus on her family.
The race to fill Leavitt’s position is underway. Blair emphasized the importance of the role, saying, “I think she’s a hard act to follow. The next person must convey President Trump’s message effectively, especially amid a press landscape that often challenges Republican achievements.”
This development comes as political messaging intensifies. The Republican Party, currently holding a narrow majority in Congress, faces critical decisions with every House seat and 35 Senate seats up for grabs. Republicans control the House with a 218-212 majority and the Senate with a 53-47 lead, although two independents align with Democrats.
MIDTERMS 2026: Control of Congress at Stake
The upcoming elections could greatly impact the balance of power in Washington. A gain of six House seats or four Senate seats for Democrats could shift control back to them. Despite this, Blair remains hopeful about GOP success, framing it as “mainstream Republicans versus extreme liberal Democrats.”
Blair criticized Democratic policies, accusing them of seeking higher taxes, abolishing police and prisons, and granting amnesty to all illegal immigrants.
