The Washington Mystics celebrated a remarkable achievement in their 2026 WNBA season by securing a franchise-record of 28 regular-season victories. This success marks a significant milestone for the team, reflecting their perseverance and growth.

Shakira Austin’s Exceptional Performance

Center Shakira Austin, at 26 years old, emerged as a standout player during the 2025-26 season. She finished the season averaging personal bests with 17 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. Beyond her on-court contributions, Austin also stepped up as a vocal leader, guiding her team to a historic number of wins.

Emotional End to the Season

Despite their regular-season achievements, the Mystics faced an emotional end to their campaign. The team experienced a season-ending loss to the Atlanta Dream at CareFirst Arena. This loss brought a somber tone to the postgame news conference, where emotions ran high.

Kiki Iriafen seemed visibly upset, looking downwards throughout most of the event. Fellow player Sonia Citron encouraged Iriafen to express her thoughts, emphasizing the shared disappointment and unity within the team.

The 2026 season, while ending in disappointment, demonstrated the Mystics’ potential and determination. With players like Austin stepping up, the future holds promise for the team as they aim to build on this season’s success.
