Vita Vea Requests Trade Amid Contract Dispute

In a surprising development, Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea has requested a trade. He played a crucial role in the team’s Super Bowl victory in 2021. Currently, negotiations on a contract extension have stalled. Vea seeks to leave Tampa, where he is in the final year of his four-year, $71 million contract signed in 2022.

Originating from California, Vea has attracted interest from several West Coast teams, including the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Chargers, and Los Angeles Rams. However, Rams head coach Sean McVay downplayed any trade discussions on the “Up & Adams” show. “He’s a stud. I think that he is a great player that’s always been a problem to game plan against, but I think we feel good about our group right now,” McVay stated.

Despite McVay’s comments, the Rams’ intentions might differ. They are aiming for a Super Bowl, demonstrated by their recent trade for two-time Defensive Player of the Year, Myles Garrett. With Garrett’s addition, the Rams created significant buzz around their defensive capabilities.

Their roster features a 38-year-old quarterback, Matthew Stafford, and they are preparing a contract extension for All-Pro receiver Puka Nacua. The Rams are making strategic moves, which could involve Vea if considered as the missing piece. They have shown openness to enhancing their defense by possibly bringing back Aaron Donald.

Vea, aged 31, comes off a challenging season with the Buccaneers. His stats include 34 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 13 quarterback hits, 4.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery in 17 games. He maintained a streak of five seasons with four or more sacks, earning a 70.2 overall PFF grade that ranked 20th among tackles last year. Additionally, Vea recorded 51 total pressures, placing him seventh in the NFL.

Adding Vea’s talents to the Rams’ existing lineup, which features Garrett, Kobie Turner, Byron Young, Braden Fiske, Omar Speights, and Nate Landman, could enhance LA’s defensive strength. A primary concern is determining the Rams’ willingness to meet Vea’s trade demands and offer him the long-term contract he desires.
