Recognition of Heroic Actions
U.S. Marines were honored for their bravery during the tumultuous evacuation at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan. Gunnery Sgt. Jonathan Eby, Lance Cpl. Jordan Houston, and Cpl. Michael Gretzon received medals for their courageous roles during the 2021 Abbey Gate bombing.
High Honors For Valor
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth awarded these Marines prestigious honors at the Pentagon’s Hall of Heroes. Eby and Houston received the upgraded Bronze Star with ‘V’ devices for valor. Gretzon was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with a ‘V’ device.
“For half a decade, recognition was delayed due to bureaucratic caution or politics,” said Hegseth.
Detailed Actions
Eby took charge after a suicide bomber attack, saving many lives through his leadership. Houston, despite being injured, provided essential medical aid to fellow Marines. Gretzon continued to support his squad even after being wounded.
“I don’t know where we find such men, but I’m not sure we deserve them,” commented Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Eric Smith.
The Fallen Remembered
Thirteen American service members lost their lives during the attack, with the chaplain reminding attendees of their sacrifice. Families of the deceased are comforted as investigations continue into the events surrounding the withdrawal.
Investigations and Findings
Sean Parnell, leading the Afghanistan Withdrawal Special Review Panel, reported the discovery of classified documents related to the attack. The War Department is expected to provide further insights by the end of the year.
Hegseth promised these Marines’ valor is now officially acknowledged.
