US soccer fans were left anxious during the World Cup opener against Paraguay when Christian Pulisic, a key player for the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT), did not return for the second half. Pulisic, known for his impressive play and crucial assists, had contributed significantly by assisting on the team’s second goal, scored by Folarin Balogun.
Pulisic, who hails from Hershey, Pennsylvania, also plays for AC Milan in his club career. After his active presence in the first half, his absence was noticeable when the team returned to the field, replaced by Sebastian Berhalter, son of former USMNT player and coach Gregg Berhalter.
The switch raised concerns as the team did not provide any initial reason for the substitution. However, Pulisic indicated to his family in the stands that he was doing fine. USMNT secured a 4-1 victory, and post-match, head coach Mauricio Pochettino explained the change. According to The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, Pochettino disclosed that Pulisic suffered a kick to the calf, leading to tightness. He emphasized the substitution was precautionary.
Concern among fans partly stems from Pulisic’s recent injuries. He opted out of the Gold Cup last summer for rest and faced various injuries the following season. ESPN reported he recently missed a match due to a lower-back issue. Pulisic’s importance to the team was evident as his absence impacted the second half.
Despite Pochettino’s assurance of precaution, supporters may continue to worry until Pulisic is back in action, demonstrating full recovery. His role as a critical USMNT player ensures fans eagerly await his return.
