The USC Trojans opened their college football season successfully by defeating San Jose State University 42-26 in Week 0. Entering the season ranked No. 14, the Trojans were expected to perform well. However, there was concern over the attendance at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, with many empty seats noted despite it being the team’s home opener.
The Trojans are considered one of the top teams in the nation. Despite being favored to win by five touchdowns against SJSU, the images of vacant seats stirred conversations on social media platforms.
Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley addressed these discussions at a recent press conference. “This is USC, right? People are going to pay attention,” Riley stated. “People are going to have an opinion. It’s part of being a blue-blood school. I don’t buy into the false narrative. I think that comes from a lot of people that don’t follow our program. And most of those who have never set foot in the Coliseum.”
Riley emphasized that attendance has increased every year during his tenure, as has the team’s performance in the Coliseum. Their record last year included undefeated games at home, contributing to a dynamic atmosphere he expects to continue this season.
The high temperature of over 90 degrees in Los Angeles during the game may have contributed to fans opting for other summer activities, assuming a guaranteed Trojans victory. The Trojans will play at home again on Friday against Fresno State when the temperature is expected to be slightly cooler, around 87 degrees.
The “false narrative” Riley referenced may resurface during high-profile matchups this season. Upcoming games include contests against No. 2 Oregon on September 26 and No. 17 Washington the week after. USC will also face the top-ranked team, Ohio State, on Halloween.
The college football season has begun with buzz and controversy, but Riley and the Trojans aim to focus on their performance and diminish the external distractions. More fan attendance at future games could help address the current criticism.
