UK Trade Ban on Israeli Settlements

The Israeli settlement of Har Homa, backdropped by the Israeli-occupied Palestinian West Bank city of Bethlehem (R), is seen in the Israel-annexed East Jerusalem on August 14, 2026. All Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which has been occupied since 1967, are illegal under international law, with Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank gripped by almost daily violence involving Israeli troops and settlers since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023. London — The British government announced a ban on imports of goods produced in Jewish settlements located in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband declared on Tuesday that settlers in these areas are engaging in ‘ethnic cleansing’ against Palestinians.

The move aims to pressure Israel about its settlement expansions, which the U.K. believes threatens the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel, known as the two-state solution. Canada and France also announced similar bans on settlement goods, joining countries like Ireland, Spain, Norway, Belgium, and the Netherlands who have either restricted or are considering restricting trade with these settlements.

Miliband stated, “Our argument is not with the people of Israel, with whom the U.K. has unshakeable bonds, our argument is with the conduct of its government.”

He accused the settlers of creating hardships including demolishing houses, destroying roads, and displacing families.

In response, U.S. ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee criticized the U.K.’s actions, calling them “irrational” and warning of possible repercussions for British businesses in the U.S. Huckabee expressed confusion over why the U.K. focuses on Israel rather than applying sanctions to nations like North Korea or Russia.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham reportedly spoke with President Trump prior to the announcement, emphasizing the U.K.’s dedication to regional peace and the necessity of a two-state solution.

The ban on settlement goods is expected to be symbolic and specific, targeting products originating from settlements instead of a broader embargo on Israeli goods. However, there are concerns that the sanctions could extend to other Israeli products, services, and companies.

The announcement signifies a downturn in U.K.-Israel relations, with Israel warning of potential retaliatory measures. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar threatened consequences while Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich urged the expulsion of the British ambassador from Israel.

Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for shutting down the British consulate in East Jerusalem, accusing it of working for the Palestinian Authority and called for a firm reaction to Britain’s actions.

This story remains developing.
