UCLA’s Strong Defense and Knight’s Performance Secure Win Over San Diego State

UCLA triumphed over San Diego State with a 28-10 victory at the Rose Bowl, driven by an impressive defensive performance and running back Wayne Knight’s consistent scoring. Knight added another three touchdowns to his season tally, contributing significantly to the win.

Quarterback Nico Iamaleava achieved 14 completed passes out of 22 attempts, gaining 151 yards but throwing an interception. The fourth quarter saw UCLA scoring 21 points, lifting their record to 2-0 this season.

Knight was crucial in rushing for 97 yards, while Semaj Morgan caught six passes for 73 yards, helping UCLA overcome a goalless first half. The first half ended with disappointment after a drive into the red zone finished with an interception near the goal line.

Head coach Bob Chesney might have found the first half challenging in his debut coaching at the Rose Bowl. However, the improved second half performance gave reasons for satisfaction. UCLA scored all their points post-halftime, resulting in a solid win and a continuation of their unbeaten record.

Iamaleava showed difficulties in his return to the Rose Bowl, dealing with two turnovers including a pivotal interception to San Diego State’s Mike Lindsay in the end zone. Despite missing starting wideouts Mikey Matthews and Landon Ellis, Michigan transfer Semaj Morgan stepped up with a notable performance, achieving 73 receiving yards and a key 25-yard punt return that led to UCLA’s first touchdown.

The Bruins flourished in the rushing game, amassing 214 yards and four touchdowns in total. Wayne Knight led as the standout performer, with 97 yards on 13 carries, scoring three times. Although the Bruins’ offense took time to gain momentum, the defense remained strong from the outset.

The ‘Bruin Bullies’ controlled the opposing quarterback Jayden Denegal, limiting him to 45 yards on six-of-17 attempts. Linebacker Jalen Woods contributed by intercepting Denegal in the fourth quarter, aiding the team’s third touchdown. The pass rush remained effective, with two sacks against San Diego State, following a previous three-sack game against Cal.
