Uber Halts Operations in Nigeria and Uganda

The sudden decision to suspend operations has left the ride-hailing app Uber with a reduced presence on the African continent.

As of September 3, 2026, Uber confirmed its withdrawal from Nigeria and Uganda. The announcement emerged amidst ongoing operational challenges and increased oil prices. However, the company has not disclosed how many active drivers will be affected by this move.

The unexpected closure comes after more than 12 years of Uber’s presence in Nigeria, one of Africa’s largest and most populous countries. Drivers reported that they were informed of the decision almost simultaneously with the public, receiving minimal prior notice.

Local media outlets shared stories of passengers who were caught off guard, receiving the notice while they were still traveling via Uber services.
