The United States has halted operations in Mexicali, a city located in Mexico’s Baja California state. This decision follows concerns over a ‘potential threat’ in the area. Consequently, U.S. nationals are advised to refrain from traveling to this border city.
The U.S. Mission in Mexico reported a reduction in operations and travel to Mexicali starting Tuesday. They have urged Americans to take precautionary measures such as:
- Avoiding government buildings in Mexicali
- Seeking shelter during any incidents
- Informing friends and family of their safety if an incident occurs
- Following guidance from Mexican law enforcement
- Monitoring local media for updates
- Being vigilant of their environment
Officials have not provided specific details about the threat in Mexicali. Currently, Baja California is categorized as a ‘Level 2’ risk area for U.S. travelers, who are advised to ‘exercise caution due to terrorism and crime.’
Contact was made with the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico for comments on Tuesday, even though it was outside regular working hours.
This situation is developing. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
