As Americans gear up for July 4 celebrations, the U.S. Coast Guard has intensified security measures nationwide. This year’s event, celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary, features one of the Coast Guard’s most complex security operations. Admiral Kevin Lunday, the Coast Guard commandant, highlighted this effort in an interview with ABC News.

Coast Guard Enhancements

Additional resources mobilized include 1,000 personnel and 79 boats across 13 cities. These reinforcements complement regular forces to address potential threats. Admiral Lunday emphasized the goal is to ensure preparedness for any situation and to mitigate threats effectively.

Concern about security readiness is especially high around Independence Day events, particularly in Washington, D.C. Over a million attendees are expected on the National Mall, where President Donald Trump is set to deliver a speech before a large fireworks display.

Focus on Washington, D.C.

D.C. serves as the focal point for the Coast Guard’s operations. For the first time, a significant portion of the Potomac River near national monuments will be closed to boats, accommodating the extensive fireworks event.

NORAD has collaborated with the Coast Guard in preparation for these celebrations. In recent exercises, Coast Guard helicopters and NORAD aircraft successfully intercepted a plane intruding into restricted airspace. This successful drill ensured the plane landed safely at Joint Base Andrews.

Admiral Lunday stated that the Coast Guard has devised strategies against drone incursions and cyber threats.

Nationwide Security Efforts

Coast Guard strategies extend beyond the capital. In San Francisco, for example, measures ensure public safety during the Golden Gate Bridge fireworks. Drones are prohibited over fireworks venues, and safety zones maintain vessels at safe distances.

Lieutenant Commander Eddie Kalankiewicz explained that safety zones aim to keep all maritime traffic at a safe distance from fireworks and ensure emergency response lanes are clear.

During the July 4 weekend, the Coast Guard will also enhance patrols on the Delaware River and Lake Michigan.
