The Justice Department and President Trump have agreed to settle a lawsuit concerning a $10 billion claim against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Treasury Department. Signed documents reported this agreement on Monday.
The lawsuit was originally filed by Mr. Trump in January at a federal court in Miami. It accused the agencies of mishandling and unlawfully leaking his tax returns, as well as those of his sons and the Trump Organization, to the media in 2020. Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and the Trump Organization joined him as plaintiffs.
The Justice Department and Trump’s legal team have yet to comment on the settlement terms. However, reports suggest the lawsuit would be withdrawn if a $1.7 billion fund is established. This fund would compensate Trump’s affiliates who claim they faced unlawful targeting by the current administration.
A spokesperson for Trump’s legal team commented, stating that the IRS allowed information about Trump and his family to be leaked to news outlets like the New York Times and ProPublica. This information was allegedly released without proper authorization, and Trump intends to hold responsible parties accountable.
In April, both the Justice Department and Trump’s side requested more time to reach a resolution, hoping to avoid lengthy litigation processes.
