Trump Proposes Naming Alabama Bridge After Himself at Mobile Rally

At a rally in Mobile, Alabama, President Donald Trump suggested naming the Mobile Bay bridge project after himself. This proposal echoes his tendency to connect his brand with major public landmarks.

The Interstate 10 Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project had its groundbreaking on the same day. This long-planned infrastructure effort is estimated to cost over $4 billion. Trump emphasized the $3 billion in federal funding from his administration that supports the project.

Maybe I’ll be happy, and they’ll name the damn bridge after me, Trump stated during his speech. He added he would welcome any project overruns if it resulted in an extraordinary bridge.

Earlier in the day, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy attended the groundbreaking ceremony. The project aims to connect Mobile with Alabama’s Eastern Shore communities. Trump and his allies view this federal funding as a significant achievement for the state.

Empty Seats at the Rally

Videos shared on social media appeared to show empty sections at Trump’s event at Mobile’s Mitchell Center. Some upper-level seats seemed unoccupied, drawing attention due to Alabama’s strong support for Trump.

In contrast to the empty seats, thousands of supporters filled the venue, loudly responding to Trump’s remarks on several topics, including immigration, Iran, infrastructure, and the economy. His comments on federal funding for the Mobile Bay bridge also received enthusiastic cheers.

These images prompted discussions online about Trump’s political standing given recent polling showing declining approval ratings. The rally was watched closely ahead of the upcoming November elections.

Alabama’s Biggest Infrastructure Project

Alabama officials describe the bridge project as the largest infrastructure development in the state’s history. The first phase involves building a new six-lane cable-stayed bridge over the Mobile River, linking to the current Bayway corridor between Mobile and Daphne.

This phase is entirely funded and projected for completion by 2031. A second phase, which lacks funding, plans to replace the existing Bayway with an elevated interstate over Mobile Bay. The bridge has been a significant political issue in Alabama due to persistent congestion in the I-10 corridor.

Naming the Bridge After Trump

Trump’s comments about naming the bridge after him did not arise in isolation. Republican Representative Barry Moore, a Senate candidate, suggested naming the structure the “Gateway to America Donald J. Trump Bridge.” The idea has gained traction among some Trump supporters in Alabama as the project progresses.

However, the concept received criticism. Former Democratic Senator Doug Jones ridiculed the proposal, suggesting that Trump prioritized personal legacy over campaigning. Jones also pointed out that Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville previously opposed parts of the bridge funding debate.

The Trend of Trump’s Name on Public Projects

Trump routinely links his name to various buildings, projects, and institutions in his career. Supporters have proposed naming public facilities and landmarks after him, but few are realized.

The bridge comments recall Trump’s efforts to alter the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, which involved proposals for naming rights on public institutions, such as Washington Dulles International Airport.

Trump’s Mobile Bay bridge remarks reflect his openness to associating his name with significant infrastructure projects. It highlights ongoing discussion among his supporters about honoring him through public institutions and landmarks.
