President Donald Trump recently introduced a refurbished presidential aircraft at Joint Base Andrews. The aircraft stands out for its size, luxury, and a new patriotic paint scheme comprised of red, white, and blue.
This Boeing 747-8i, donated by Qatar’s government and modified for presidential use, will serve as an interim Air Force One. Boeing is still working on two delayed VC-25B replacement aircraft. Trump highlighted the plane’s size, noting its significant increase compared to previous models.
AIR FORCE ONE NEW DESIGN
The aircraft’s new color scheme replaces the Kennedy-era light blue-and-white design. This updated palette will become standard across other presidential and executive airlift fleet aircraft, including those under the VC-25B program.
Trump emphasized the aircraft’s luxurious interiors, calling it the world’s most luxurious plane. He anticipates it will feature prominently in the America 250 celebrations. He mentioned plans for a July 4 flyover over Washington that includes this aircraft alongside military jets like F-22s and F-35s.
The Air Force has confirmed that the aircraft will soon begin commissioning flights. This marks the final stage of testing before it enters operational service. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink stressed that the safety and security of the commander in chief remains the top priority.
Trump cited frustration with delays in Boeing’s replacement program as the reason for seeking this immediate alternative. The ageing U.S. presidential fleet fell behind newer aircraft used by other nations. He described the aircraft as having relatively few flight hours and gave credit to Qatar for the donation.
The Pentagon had accepted the Qatari aircraft the previous year and has since prepared it for presidential duties. The process advanced more rapidly than the VC-25B program due to fewer needed interior modifications.
As the transition occurs, White House officials recently bid farewell to one of the aging jets in use for more than 30 years. This temporary solution will fill the gap until the next-generation Air Force One aircraft become available within the next two years.
Trump expressed gratitude to the over 250 personnel who worked on readying the aircraft. He called the project an example of updating a presidential fleet lagging behind the technological advancements of global leaders.
