WASHINGTON (AP) — Action will occur quickly in Washington, D.C., as it hosts an IndyCar race through its streets. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are set to attend Sunday’s Freedom 250 Grand Prix, where cars will speed through downtown, including Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House.

Trump expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “Their beautiful cars are going to make freedom roar.” Prior to the race, Trump and his wife will lead the prerace kickoff in his presidential limo, according to U.S. Ambassador Monica Crowley, Trump’s liaison to America250.

The IndyCar race, featuring cars reaching speeds of 200 mph past monuments, is one of Trump’s celebrations for America’s 250th birthday. Previous events included a UFC fight at the White House, military flyovers, a massive July Fourth fireworks show, and a Great American State Fair.

These events feature Trump’s friends and aim to showcase power, Americana, and spectacle. Besides the Grand Prix, attendees will enjoy prerace shows and military flyovers, reminiscent of the July Fourth celebrations.

The race occurs amidst Trump’s struggle to resolve the conflict with Iran, which began six months ago and has raised gasoline prices. Concerns grow among Republican officials about the focus on ceremonial aspects during his second term.

The president’s recent executive order praised the Freedom 250 Grand Prix’s drivers and its American spirit, aiming to display Washington’s majesty as a celebration of America’s semiquincentennial. Roger Penske, a friend of Trump, and Bud Denker, race chair, led the effort to bring the race to D.C.

The Penske Corporation is funding most expenses, including track construction, while D.C. handled repaving, welding manhole covers to avoid hazards for race cars.

Sunday’s event also highlights Trump’s influence on the nation’s capital, marking structures and monuments with his presence, like banners with his image on government buildings and renovations in iconic locations.
