President Donald Trump addressed the issue of espionage between the United States and China, affirming the mutual practice of spying. His remarks came after a report suggested Chinese entities assisted Iran with satellite data prior to an attack that killed three U.S. troops.
While on Air Force One, Trump commented on a Wall Street Journal report. This report alleged that Chinese sources provided Iran with high-resolution satellite images of the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. This information came before the missile strike by Tehran on July 17, which resulted in the deaths of U.S. servicemen.
“They basically do what we do,” Trump stated in reference to China’s espionage activities. He acknowledged the reciprocal nature of spying, saying, “China spies on us. I say you’re right, and we spy on them, too.”
When questioned about addressing the issue with China’s President Xi Jinping, Trump noted that both nations behave in a reasonable manner. Xi is scheduled for a visit to Washington on September 24 for discussions with Trump.
The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. officials connected the satellite imagery assistance to the Iranian attack. This case is viewed as clear evidence of Chinese support having lethal effects on American military personnel. However, U.S. officials did not specify which Chinese entities were involved nor directly accused the Chinese government of participating in or endorsing the attack.
No immediate comment was available from the White House regarding this matter. President Xi’s upcoming visit is anticipated to address various issues, including espionage.
