President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani are set to meet on Monday at Gracie Mansion. This meeting tests their emerging working relationship despite ongoing disagreements over major policy issues, including immigration.
While Trump and Mamdani continue to criticize each other, they have identified areas for cooperation. They previously had a positive meeting in February at the Oval Office, which focused on New York housing initiatives. However, policy tensions persist. Mamdani opposes Trump’s immigration policies, while Trump frequently criticizes Mamdani’s approaches.
“Sadly, Mayor Mamdani is DESTROYING New York! It has no chance!” wrote Trump in April, following Governor Kathy Hochul’s proposal for a tax on New York City’s second homes valued over $5 million, a plan Mamdani supported.
During a meeting in November, Trump first met Mamdani and suggested Mamdani might “surprise some conservative people.” He added, “The better he does, the happier I am.” Their last meeting in February was particularly cordial, focusing on a New York housing proposal.
Despite their differences, Mamdani sought Trump’s backing for a $21 billion project to build affordable homes, including parks, schools, and clinics. This proposal aimed to create union jobs and boost New York’s housing market.
Trump is visiting New York City for the UN General Assembly. He plans to meet Mamdani before Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit scheduled for Wednesday.
The ongoing debate around immigration remains a source of tension. The situation intensified when ICE arrested over 2,100 people in New York during “Operation Rotten Apple.” Mamdani’s administration is part of a lawsuit challenging Trump’s public charge rule, which altered how officials evaluate immigration applicants’ potential use of public benefits.
“If you are a citizen, or seeking humanitarian relief like asylum, these changes will not affect you,” stated Mamdani last week. He explained that the rule’s vagueness creates uncertainty and fear among immigrant New Yorkers.
Mamdani is anticipated to address reporters post-meeting. Fox News Digital attempted to seek comments from the White House and Mamdani’s office.
