With the World Cup final looming, President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed their admiration for the success of this year’s tournament, held in the United States. Speaking at a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York City, both leaders highlighted the significant achievements and impact of the event.
The tournament has witnessed tremendous attendance and viewership. Infantino noted that 7 million fans have attended the matches and emphasized that billions watched the games on television. The United States hosted matches in 11 of the 16 designated venues, including all quarterfinals, semifinals, and the upcoming final.
“I promised you we would make a great World Cup. And, by all means, this World Cup has exceeded all expectations,” Infantino stated, praising the unity and joy experienced throughout the tournament.
Infantino further celebrated the tournament’s ability to unite people from across the globe. He mentioned that everyone who attended or watched the tournament engaged with the beauty of the host cities and the diverse fanbase.
“The American dream came to reality. We united the world in America. When I told you we will do a great World Cup, you told me America will welcome the world. And you did welcome the world,” Infantino added.
“Everyone enjoyed it, experiencing happiness and joy. FIFA has been the official happiness provider to humanity for 120 years. The success of this World Cup, Mr. President, wouldn’t have been possible without your support and effort.”
The event has been described by Infantino as “the greatest human, social, and cultural event that mankind has ever witnessed.” This sentiment was echoed by President Trump, who referred to it as potentially “the most successful sporting event in the history of the world.”
Trump expressed pride in sharing America’s richness with the world, stating that the country is now stronger and wealthier, partly due to hosting the tournament. He emphasized the World Cup’s significance beyond just sports, indicating its special cultural and social impact.
Both leaders will attend the final match at MetLife Stadium between Spain and Argentina. Spain is participating in their second final after their victory in South Africa in 2010. Argentina seeks to repeat their success, aiming to be the first back-to-back winners since Brazil’s triumph in 1958 and 1962.
