Confrontation at Minneapolis Rally

The rally supported WNBA star Sophie Cunningham, who advocates for sex-protected spaces in female sports.

WNBPA Statement on Values and Debate

In response to the trans-athlete debate within the league, the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) emphasized justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. The union’s statement highlighted embracing varied lived experiences while protecting women’s sports. It stressed that hate and demonization fuel fear and division, stating, “We will continue to have hard conversations but will not be used as political pawns.”

Sophie Cunningham’s Advocacy

More than two weeks ago, Sophie Cunningham voiced her stance on protecting young girls in sports, emphasizing the importance of sex-protected spaces. She stated, “Young girls…shouldn’t have to go against biological men.” Her advocacy has stirred both support and opposition. Rallies have been held prior to her games to back her stance.

Enes Kanter Freedom’s WNBA Draft Announcement

Shortly after Cunningham’s comments, Enes Kanter Freedom, a former NBA player, announced intentions to join the WNBA draft, stating he meets all eligibility requirements by identifying as a woman.

Criticism from Megan Rapinoe

Megan Rapinoe criticized Cunningham for being photographed with Riley Gaines, who competed against trans swimmer Lia Thomas. Rapinoe expressed her disapproval, projecting assumptions about Cunningham’s beliefs based on her actions.
